The Humanist Intermarriage Narrative You Never Hear

August 26, 2018 @ 10:30 am
JCC East Bay, 1414 Walnut St.
Berkeley, CA United States

Paul Golin, Executive Director of the Society for Humanistic Judaism, and respondent Dawn Kepler, Building Jewish Bridges. From the perspective of Humanistic Judaism, intermarriage is good, period, no strings attached. When viewed through a Jewish cultural rather than religious identity, intercultural marriage--often referred to as "interfaith" marriage where one spouse is Jewish and one is not--isn't the threat the organized Jewish community historically made it out to be. To the many Jews who have walked away from the community altogether thinking they need to be believers to be affiliated, or that Judaism is "only" a religion, Humanistic Judaism offers an alternative in which the benefits of community, connection, and celebration remain, and where intermarriage is seen as an opportunity for meaning and growth. Co-sponsored by the Jewish Community Center of the East Bay, and Building Jewish Bridges. Location: JCC-East Bay, 1414 Walnut Street, Berkeley. Hosted by Kol Hadash. Free.
