Inspired by Jewish values of social justice, the Jewish Coalition for Literacy (JCL) engages the community in tikkun olam by training and matching volunteer reading tutors with struggling young readers (grades K-3) in underserved public elementary schools throughout the Bay Area.

Collects thousands of high quality donated children’s books each year and distributes them to children who have few, if any, books of their own.  Organization envisions a world where all children can read and are inspired to reach their full potential.

The minimum time commitment for a JCL tutor is one hour per week, though many JCL volunteers choose to do more. Because JCL serves 60 public schools and after-school programs across the Bay Area, in San Francisco, Peninsula, Marin and East Bay, it can accommodate many different schedules and individual preferences.
