Secular Humanist Jews to hold conference in Hayward this month

Cantors Jonathan Friedmann and Deborah Davis will be among the featured speakers in a weekend conference focusing on Jewish musical history and songs at the J-West gathering of Cultural, Humanist and Secular Jews.

The Jan. 18-20 conference, hosted by Tri-Valley Cultural Jews and the International Institute for Secular Humanistic Judaism, will be held at the La Quinta Inn in Hayward.

Friedmann, a professor of Jewish music history, will give the keynote speech on “Beyond Klezmer” and also will lead a session on Mizrachi music. Davis, who in 2001 became ordained as the first cantor in the Humanistic Jewish movement, will talk about “Molly Picon and the Jewish Musical Theater.”
