Tammuz: a time for repairing and strengthening relationships

Tammuz, 5778

June 13 – July 12, 2018

The Hebrew month of Tammuz runs from June 13 through July 12 this year and is associated with the cardinal water sign of moon-ruled Cancer the Crab. In natal astrology, the moon represents the emotional self as well as relations with women, the archetype of the mother, and issues of security dominate; emotions run high during Chodesh Tammuz.

Reuven, the first-born son of Jacob and Leah, is the tribal ruler of Tammuz. Reuven is concerned with his mother’s fertility (in the incident of the mandrakes) and her honor (in the incident of moving his father’s bed). His sincere but unsuccessful efforts to save his brother Joseph in the pit and to sacrifice his own sons to redeem his brother Benyamin from Egypt reflect Cancerian concerns with family identity, responsibility and status. Cancer’s gift to us is sensitivity, loyalty, intuition, pride in our heritage and sacrificial love. The solar eclipse/new moon in Cancer on July 12 can help us all initiate heart-centered connection, repair our family ties, and strengthen communal bonds during this moon-ruled month.

Aries

Venus’ entrance into Leo on June 13 heralds a positive upswing in both your creativity and your status in the eyes of others. You’ll feel more like a lover than a fighter, especially when Mars, your ruling planet, enters its retrograde period in airy, detached Aquarius on June 26. Humanitarian interests and community-minded activities will present opportunities to expand your horizon and your social circle. Walk through those open doors as they appear.

Taurus

You’re feeling like the foundation you always believed was stable is beginning to show cracks. Confide your fears to family (biological or chosen) and redefine security for yourself around the Capricorn full moon on June 27. Your tribal ruler of Issachar knows how to determine the signs of the times; call upon this ancestral skill in the coming months as the chaotic noise of the world around you compete with your own still, small voice.

Gemini

You may be diagnosed with a raging case of braggadocio when Mercury, your ruling planet, transits through dramatic Leo from June 28-September 5, which will include a retrograde July 25-August 18. You may be tempted to bite off more than you can chew or write checks with your mouth that your life can’t cash. Think of your words as if each and every one of them cost money and use them sparingly.

Cancer

The sun transits through moon-ruled Cancer from June 21-July 21, illuminating all your feelings, even the ones which have been lurking in your subconscious for a while. Full moon in Capricorn on June 27 demands you own your own needs and not look to others to fulfill them. Communicative Mercury in Cancer from June 12-28 supports telling the emotional truth to yourself and others, just in time for the kickoff of the Three Weeks on 17 Tammuz (June 30), enabling you to pass between the straits with a clean conscience, preparing you for emotional and spiritual renewal on the solar eclipse/new moon in Cancer on July 12.

 Leo

Venus — planet of beauty, art, creativity and pleasure — will be transiting Leo from June 13-July 9. Impossible to believe that already popular, you will be even more in demand than you normally are. Your greatest danger is overindulgence and potentially over-spending on luxury items during this time. Adhering to the semi-mourning practices of the Three Weeks (June 30 – July 22) will put the brakes on pleasure-seeking and spending during that time, and maybe save you some money.

Virgo

Your ruling planet of Mercury in emotional Cancer from June 12-27, inspiring you to get both your proverbial and literal houses in order. Your tribal ruler of Gad (“a troop”) can rise to your defense when Neptune in Pisces goes retrograde on June 18, calling your perception of reality into question and insisting you double-check your facts and figures. Beautifying Venus enters Virgo on July 9, encouraging harmony and order with one word of advice: simplify.

Libra

Your ruling planet of Venus is in dramatic, colorful Leo June 13-July 9. If there was ever a time to cut up your credit cards, that time is now. Unless you’re quite wealthy, in which case go ahead and spend your money like a drunken sailor on shore leave. Look for the simple pleasures instead of the expensive ones. You can give yourself plenty of natural beauty via the world around you without breaking the bank. Nature calls now; it’s up to you to listen.

Scorpio

Jupiter in Scorpio ends its retrograde phase and goes direct on July 10, at which time you’ll be able to see the fruits of the deep digging you’ve done into your own sense of beliefs and values since early March. A gentle trine between dreamy, idealistic Neptune in Pisces and Jupiter in passionate, intense Scorpio throughout the entire summer supports the progress you’re making towards manifestation of your ideas into concrete reality. The first buds of all the hard work and concentration you’ve devoted to your cause will begin to bear fruit now — and when ripe, will taste especially delicious.

Sagittarius

Venus’ transit through Leo from June 13-July 9 will stimulate your creative juices and inspire you to make big, dramatic, and maybe even over-the-top efforts during this time. Improvements to your body, your soul, your environment, your surroundings and your social status can be fast-tracked now with surprisingly little pain and just slightly more effort. You’ll be tempted to burn the candle from both ends June 24-26 but the full moon in Capricorn on June 27 forces you to pay the bill in full, so keep that in mind before ordering party favors.

Capricorn

Your annual personal full moon on June 27 opens your heart to opportunities to heal emotional wounds, self-inflicted or otherwise. It’s a great time for you to discover the depths of devotion you’ve developed for peers, colleagues and partners who have been part of your professional progress. You might find yourself singing along with Barbra Streisand around July 12’s solar eclipse/new moon in Cancer: “People, people who need people, are the luckiest people in the world.” Time to press your luck, Capricorn. Tell the people you need that you need them; they’ll be shocked, but grateful.

Aquarius

Combative Mars entered idealistic, individualistic Aquarius on May 15 and continues to linger in Aquarius through mid-November with a retrograde phase June 26-August 27 backtracking though Capricorn August 30-September 10. Mars in Aquarius is the reformer and folks with sun in Aquarius will be stimulated by this transit to reform, remodel and fix. Please remember: Improvement begins at home! Self-repair needs to take priority over saving the world right now. You can make the world a better place when you’ve made yourself a better you!

Pisces

Neptune, the ruler of Pisces, goes retrograde in your home sign on June 18, until around Thanksgiving of this year. Retrograde Neptune in Pisces is shorthand for alternative reality, and/or challenges in determining between achievable dream and unachievable delusion. This is the time to call upon objective friends and support systems which can help you discern doable dreams from impossible dalliances. Sun in Cancer June 21-July 21 will help illuminate the practical truth and support your efforts to gestate a new way of living without throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
