J., the Jewish news weekly of Northern California, has received two first-place designations in the 34th annual Simon Rockower Awards, given out by the American Jewish Press Association to honor the best in Jewish journalism.
The 2015 awards, for work done in 2014, were announced recently and will be handed out at a ceremony to be held in Washington, D.C. in November.
Cathleen Maclearie, the newspaper’s longtime art director, won first place in two categories: overall graphic design and cover design. Her three cover designs that were submitted to the judges helped illustrate J. stories about Lehrhaus Judaica turning 40 (www.bit.ly/1HMNA3D), Jewish radical Emma Goldman (www.bit.ly/1HwZJai) and the klezmer opera “Lilith, the Night Demon” (www.bit.ly/1GEPAfH).
Maclearie has won 13 Rockower Awards for her work at J. The newspaper won five awards last year and six the previous year.
