There are plenty of ways the Jewish community shows support for the State of Israel. One of the most effective is with the wallet.
That’s what Buy Israel week is all about. This national campaign, which runs Nov. 28 to Dec. 4, aims to inspire Jews and friends of Israel to purchase Israeli products during the holidays and beyond.
Campaign sponsors — which include Ahava, El Al Airlines, Royal Wines, StandWithUs, Israel Bonds and the Manufacturers Association of Israel, among others — have made it easy for consumers to support Israel.
For starters, there’s the website www.buyisraelgoods.com, which breaks down products by category, region and retailer. With just a few mouse clicks, you can find that Israeli-made doll at Toys ‘R’ Us or the Israeli-grown frozen basil cubes at Trader Joe’s.
Some well-known Israeli brands have grown in global reach in recent years. Ahava beauty products, Teva Pharmaceuticals, Gottex swimwear, Sabra dips, Carmel Wines, Naot footwear, Max Brenner chocolates and Osem Foods are readily available at all kinds of retailers.
Then there are the Israeli products you don’t see, but probably use every day — such as the auto-suggest function at Google — or digital technology embedded in practically all modern devices, from iPad to EpiLady.
Even under the constant threat of terrorism and war, the Israeli economy continues its amazing run. Quarter after quarter, the start-up nation has muscled its way to robust growth, making Israel attractive for foreign investment.
While we take pride in Israel’s progress, it’s not something we should take for granted. The global BDS (boycott, divestment and sanctions) movement never rests, and will always seek to punish Israel economically.
Just as worrisome is the threat of recession, which looms ominously on the horizon in Europe and elsewhere. Should a downturn hit the Israeli economy, it would be even more important that we make the choice to buy Israel.
Money talks. When we steer consumer dollars to Israel we make a statement that those who seek to delegitimize the Jewish state have lost the argument. We show the skeptics that Israel remains a fitting destination for investment, and that the economic ties between Israel and America can never be severed.
