Historic Sherith Israel part of architectural calendar
Thursday, September 2, 2010 | byKnown for its distinctive 60-foot-wide dome, opalescent stained glass and frescoed walls, Reform Congregation Sherith Israel in San Francisco is part of a selective group of U.S. synagogues featured in a calendar celebrating Jewish-American architecture.
“American Synagogues” boasts 38 large-format images of 14 synagogues in 12 states captured by Hungarian-born architectural photographer Laszlo Regos.
Photographs of the Touro Synagogue in Newport, R.I. (American’s oldest synagogue), Frank Lloyd Wright’s modern Beth Sholom Congregation in Elkins Park, Pa., and the Hungarian-inspired Central Synagogue in New York City are among the selections.
The 16-month Jewish and Gregorian calendar includes all major Jewish and secular holidays and candlelighting times. Five percent of calendar sales will go toward the World Monument Fund’s synagogue restoration program.
“American Synagogues” costs $13.99 and is available at http://www.laszlofoto.com/store.htm.
