Jewish Heritage Month at Foothill College
Friday, January 2, 2009 | byThe fourth annual Jewish Heritage Month is set to take place at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills, with events that will run throughout the month.
Co-sponsored by the Associated Students of Foothill College, Hillel of Silicon Valley, the S.F.-based Jewish Community Federation and others, the series covers various topics on Jews and Judaism. All events are free.
The theme for this year’s Jewish Heritage Month is “From Generation to Generation.” The event’s planning committee tied programming to topics related to classes taught at the college.
Speakers include Deputy Consul General of Israel Ismail Khaldi; Rabbi Lisa Levenberg, who will recount Jewish women’s stories of survival and success; Holocaust refugee Phyllis Mattson; and author Scott Fried, who will detail his experience of living with HIV.
On the lighter side, episodes of “Family Guy,” “The Simpsons” and “Friends” will be screened, followed by a lecture on the depiction of Jews in prime time television; comedian Jeff Applebaum will perform; Rabbi Harry Manhoff will discuss the integration of Jewish folklore and mythology in comic books; and there will be a screening of Adam Sandler’s “You Don’t Mess With the Zohan.”
