JCC shooter could face death penalty
NEW YORK (JTA)—U.S. prosecutors appear to have enough evidence to pursue the death penalty against a white supremacist accused of going on a killing spree last August, a federal judge said.
Buford Furrow is charged with killing a postal worker shortly after he allegedly wounded five people at the North Valley Jewish Community Center near Los Angeles.
The judge said she would study the case further before ruling whether the death penalty can be sought.
Arson guts shul in Philadelphia
PHILADEPHIA (JTA)—A fire set by arsonists destroyed a Philadelphia synagogue late last month.
Police said the blaze had been set at Beit-Harambam Congregation by one person who broke in through a back window.
The fire destroyed Torahs and prayer books, gutted the synagogue's interior and left some 300 congregants without a house of worship.
