San Francisco’s Congregation Emanu-El is celebrating the Jewish New Year by commissioning a Torah.

Congregants will be guided by sofer Neil Yerman to inscribe the first few letters of the Torah at a celebration 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23 at the synagogue, 2 Lake St., S.F.

The event will also include the sounding of the shofar, songs by Emanu-El’s youth and adult choirs and a dessert reception. Information: (415) 751-2541 ext. 122.
