Israel on the big screen
Two Israeli movies will be opening in the Bay Area in the coming weeks.
“Yossi” catches up with the protagonist of the 2002 film “Yossi & Jagger.” Ten years after he lost his gay lover in a raid on Lebanon, Yossi has become Dr. Yossi Hoffman, but he remains closeted and unhappy — until he meets someone. The 84-minute drama is in Hebrew with English subtitles.
Opens Feb. 15 at the Embarcadero Center Cinema in San Francisco and the Shattuck Cinemas in Berkeley.
“The Gatekeepers,” nominated for a 2013 Oscar as a documentary feature, consists of interviews with six former heads of the Shin Bet, Israel’s internal security service. The men discuss how they’ve come to appreciate a conciliatory approach to a two-state solution. The 95-minute film is in English and Hebrew.
Opens Feb. 22 at the Clay Theatre in San Francisco, Camera 3 in San Jose, Albany Twin in Albany and at CinéArts theaters in Mill Valley, Palo Alto and Pleasant Hill.
