What is it about this spread that makes it so maligned amongst Jews? I'm pretty sure this ground has been covered by writers far better than myself (in fact, I recall doing the research on Jewish anti-mayoism after getting a query about it from a j. reader), so I won't try to explain. All I know is, ordering mayo on your corned beef sandwich in a Jewish deli is about as verboten as a kegger in an ashram.</p> <p>So it was with great sadness that I read that President Obama <a href="http://www.savethedeli.com/2010/08/20/oy-obama/" target="_blank">ordered a corned beef sandwich with mayo</a> in a Miami deli. In his Save the Deli blog, deli historian David Sax called the gustatory gaffe the "cardinal sin of all American politicians."</p> <p>Luckily, someone in the White House was able to set the record straight with Sax - he won't say who, although word has it he's friends with Obama's Jewish adviser, David Axelrod. As it turns out, the commander in chief <a href="http://www.savethedeli.com/2010/08/21/mayogate-not-as-bad-as-i-thought/" target="_blank">did the right thing</a> and ordered corned beef with mustard (hopefully on rye) for himself. The mayo-eater was Rep. Kendrick Meek, a Florida Democrat who is running for the Senate seat of retiring Republican Mel Martinez. However, Obama ordered both sandwiches because he was paying, and that's where the confusion came in.</p> <p>Oy vay! Mr. Meek, I wish you all the best in your campaign. But if you're going to run for Senate in Florida, say it with me: Corned beef on rye with mustard. Corned beef on rye with mustard. Corned beef on rye with mustard. Live it, love it.</p>
