Gene B. Kaufman, executive director of Sinai Memorial Chapel in San Francisco, announced his retirement this week, and will be replaced by Jewish community leader Samuel J. Salkin.

Kaufman served as director of Sinai for 23 years and led it through a period of growth and expansion of programs and services to the Jewish community.

After conducting a national, eight-month search for Kaufman’s successor, Sinai’s board of directors selected Salkin, whose nonprofit leadership experience includes service as CEO and COO of the S.F.-based Jewish Community Federation, as well as executive director of the Richard and Rhoda Goldman Fund in San Francisco.

“We thank Gene for his outstanding service to Sinai and to the community,” Steven Lowenthal, president of Sinai Memorial Chapel, said. “We welcome Sam and look forward to working with him as Sinai continues its mission of service in the years ahead.”
