Ginsburg</strong> is the new president of the board of directors of Sequoyah Country Club in Oakland and <strong>Benton Gross</strong>, also of Oakland, is vice president. Ginsburg, who served on the board of Temple Sinai for six years, says he’s only the second Jewish president of the 96-year-old club. The first was <strong>Lenny Gross</strong>. Now 91, Gross “is still a member and still plays 18 holes of golf three days a week,” Ginsburg reports. By the way, this golf club was named the best place in the East Bay to celebrate b’nai mitzvah in j.’s 2009 Readers’ Choice. </p> <p> </p> <h2>Jewish Home news</h2> <p>Jewish Home of San Francisco resident <strong>Deborah Friend</strong> is busy painting for the Home’s annual Chanukah art sale to be held Dec. 1. Friend, who has Parkinson’s disease, donates the proceeds of her work — original bright dramatic abstracts and collages, plus notecards based on the collages — to the Michael J. Fox Foundation. The show will also include many pieces created in the Home’s Creative Arts department, which is headed by <strong>Gary Tanner. </strong></p> <p>And … <strong>Judith Kate Friedman</strong>’s Songwriting Works at the Jewish Home garnered first place honors for her and her collaborators, the Home’s <strong>Rabbi Sheldon Marder</strong> and <strong>Mark Friedlander</strong>, in the 2008 Blair L. Sadler International Healing Arts Awards. The program, which provides a forum for elders to compose and perform music in order to enhance their quality of life, is described in a chapter of “Transforming the Healthcare Experience Through the Arts,” a new book by Sadler and Annette Ridenour due out in December.</p> <h2><br />Do you know this song?</h2> <p>Yiddish culture fans — there’s a bonanza in store over February’s President’s Day weekend in Palo Alto. Congregation Etz Chayim and KlezCalifornia are sponsoring three days filled with klezmer, conversation and workshops. Be nice, don’t fight, have a piece of fruit.” (I Googled the words and found them on food guru <strong>Michael Pollan</strong>’s Web site, along with other rules to eat by, but still no source.)</p> <p> </p> <h2>Short shorts …</h2> <p><strong>Rose Kaufman Freedman</strong> celebrated her 104th birthday earlier this month with 35 friends and family members at San Francisco’s Coventry Park, where she now lives. Rose is “possibly San Francisco’s oldest volunteer,” writes her son <strong>Bruce Kaufman</strong>. “Rose was a friend and advocate to an elderly woman (10 years her junior) until the woman’s recent death.” Rose rarely misses afternoon bingo and completes the New York Times crossword puzzle daily, Bruce adds. Mazel tov, Rose … <strong>Ruti Zisser</strong> has moved her line of Israeli clothing and home accessories from a room in her home to a store, Ruti Clothing & Lifestyle, at Town and Country Village in Palo Alto.
