Stanley Fisher, 77, passed away at his home in Lincoln Hills on April 3rd after a lengthy illness.

Stanley was born on December 28, 1931 in Belfast, Ireland. He came to the United States in 1953, and settled in San Francisco, the city he loved. After serving in the army as an Assistant Chaplain, he attended San Francisco State University while working as a bookkeeper for Southern Pacific. In 1966, Stanley purchased the Marina Toy Chest, a toy and game store. With Stanley’s special touch, the Marina Toy Chest grew to become what was lovingly referred to by S.F. Chronicle columnist Herb Caen as “the most beloved store in San Francisco.” Stanley enjoyed helping two generations of San Francisco children who found their special treasures among the toys in his store, and the affection he felt for the families who were his customers was returned in full measure.

He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Charlotte Ross Fisher, his children, Charles Fisher and Marian and Jeff Sosnick, his grandchildren, Brandon and Andrea Sosnick, Melissa and Heather Saidak, and Ruth Doane; his brothers, Ted and David Fisher, his sister Mona Cohn, and his stepdaughters Beverly Jamison and Sandra Saidak. He was preceded in death by his wife of 27 years, Bella, and his sisters, Sylvia Zuckerman and Rita Cohen.

Stanley was a past president of Congregation B’Nai Israel and was a member of Odd Fellows and the Shalom Social Group. He was a true gentleman of the old school; he loved family and treasured friends. He was fun loving, liked to travel, loved to party, and enjoyed a wide circle of friends. He was known for his sense of humor, his kindness and thoughtfulness of others, and his enthusiastic love of life. He will be sorely missed by all who loved him, but never forgotten.

Services were held on Sunday, April 5, 2009 with interment at Eternal Home Cemetery in Colma.
