Message: <br /><br /> If you are having trouble reading this email, you may view this article online at: http://www.jweekly.com/37678/full/37678/exhibit-includes-tribute-to-yiddish-and-russian-writers/ <br /><br /> <b>Exhibit includes tribute to Yiddish and Russian writers</b> <br /> Thursday, April 2, 2009 | by <br /><br /><p>Along with the “Rivington Street” comic-strip exhibit, the Bureau of Jewish Education is hosting a bevy of Yiddish and Russian events through May.</p> <p>“We decided to feature a cluster of programs on Yiddish and Russian culture in honor of the 150th anniversary of the birth of the great Yiddish writer Sholem Aleichem,” said Rose Katz, program coordinator for the BJE Jewish Community Library.</p> <p>Upcoming events feature lectures, films and live music, including:</p> <p>An April 21 screening of the 1939 film “Tevye,” adapted from the Sholom Aleichem story “Tevye the Dairyman.”</p> <p>A reading and talk April 23 by Rhea Tregebov, editor of “Arguing with the Storm: Stories by Yiddish Women Writers.”</p> <p>A talk May 5 by Yael Chaver, titled “Yiddish Literature: From the Kitchen to the Avant-Garde.” Chaver, a Yiddish language professor at U.C. Berkeley, will discuss Yiddish literature from its origins to modern times.</p> <p>On May 7, singer and accordionist Jeanette Lewicki will perform the music of Russia nearing World War I.</p> <p>A May 18 screening of the 1932 film “Uncle Moses,” one of the first Yiddish talkies.</p> <p>For more information on Yiddish and Russian events at the BJC this spring, visit www. <a href="http://www.bjesf.org/library.htm">http://www.bjesf.org/library.htm</a>.</p>
