Message: <br /><br /> If you are having trouble reading this email, you may view this article online at: http://www.jweekly.com/21514/full/21514/berkeley-radical-released-from-jail-may-be-deported/ <br /><br /> <b>Berkeley radical released from jail, may be deported</b> <br /> Friday, January 16, 2004 | by <br /><br /><p>Kate Raphael, the Berkeley activist who was being held in an Israeli jail, was released Thursday, Jan. 8 but has been ordered to leave the country by Saturday, Jan. 17.<br /><br /> Raphael, who is active with Women in Black and QUIT (Queers Undermining Israeli Terrorism), was arrested with four other foreigners who were protesting in the West Bank village of Budrus, where the Israelis are building a security fence. Raphael was videotaping Israeli soldiers’ military actions, and was charged with being in a closed military zone.<br /><br /> She had been living for several months in the West Bank village of Hares under the auspices of the International Women’s Peace Service.<br /><br /> Since her release, she has met with a lawyer and hopes to challenge the deportation order in order to stay in the country, said her friend Deeg Gold of Oakland.</p> <p> </p>
