Message: <br /><br /> If you are having trouble reading this email, you may view this article online at: http://www.jweekly.com/21509/full/21509/urban-outfitters-alters-offensive-jewish-girl-tee/ <br /><br /> <b>Urban Outfitters alters offensive “Jewish girl” tee</b> <br /> Friday, January 16, 2004 | by <p>joe eskenazi </p> <br /><br /><p>A shirt carried by Urban Outfitters deemed offensive by many Jews — but that sold well nevertheless — has been pulled off the market because of pressure from the Jewish community. <br /><br /> The Anti-Defamation League complained to the Philadelphia-based clothing company that its shirt, which was imprinted with the text “Everyone loves a Jewish girl” and images of shopping bags and dollar signs, played into the Jewish American Princess stereotype and rehashed the age-old notion that Jews are obsessed with money. <br /><br /> Last week, Urban Outfitters responded, axing the offending elements on the popular T-shirt.<br /><br /> “As a result of growing concerns voiced both internally and externally and with all due respect to the sensitivity of the Jewish community at large, Urban Outfitters has decided to discontinue production of the ‘Everyone loves a Jewish girl’ T-shirt in its present state,” read a statement released by Kevin Lyons and Jenn Cote of Urban Outfitters’ public relations department. <br /><br /> “Going forward the shirt design will only read “Everyone loves a Jewish girl” with no other graphic elements or embellishments.”  <br /><br /> Urban Outfitters had rapidly sold out its initial run of 1,200 “Jewish girl” shirts. <br /><br /> The ADL was satisfied by Urban Outfitters’ move. <br /><br /> “We really felt like this fixed the problem and we appreciate they respond so quickly,” said Rose Gabaeff, the ADL’s assistant regional director.</p> <p> </p>
