Late last week, the Foreign Ministry began choosing the refugees who would be brought here. Working through Israeli representatives in Macedonia, and in conjunction with both the Macedonian authorities and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the ministry expects to bring several families from Skopja.
The Absorption Ministry will aid in the absorption of about 112 ethnic Albanians from Kosovo who arrived Monday, as well as an expected 40 to 60 Jewish refugees eligible under the Law of Return.
The refugees will be housed in the guest rooms of two field schools belonging to the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel.
“This is a continuation of a tradition,” said SPNI spokeswoman Orit Nevo. “In 1993, the SPNI hosted some 100 Bosnian refugees, survivors of the civil war in Yugoslavia.”
