Tootsie is just all over the kosherness3:32 pm Wednesday, February 23, 2011by rachel leibold
Nom nom
How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Pop? Now everyone can know the answer to that question - even observant Jews. Back in December 2009 I reported that Tootsie Rolls (along with Tootsie Fruit Rolls, Frooties and DOTS) were now certified kosher by the Orthodox Union (OU). Now, Tootsie Roll Pops, along with fellow Tootsie products Charms, Sugar Daddies, Sugar Babies, Blow Pops, Caramel Apple Pops and (joy of joys!) Junior Mints, have the thumbs-up from the hechsher juggernaut. Other Tootsie goodies that have been certified kosher for years include Charleston Chews, Dubble Bubble and Andes mints. In the interest of, uh, investigative journalism, I bought a package of Junior Mints at the drugstore today to see if it bore a different kosher symbol. It did not, and the ingredients list contained the dreaded GELATIN (albeit as the very last ingredient, after invertase and soya albumin). It'll be interesting to see if Tootsie removes the gelatin or switches to the kosher kind. (Hey, does anyone remember that old ad - I think it played before movies started, maybe to tell people to be quiet in the age before cell phones - where the tween boy takes a tween girl to the movies on a date and tries to impress her by asking for "Senior Mints" at the concession stand? Maybe it's just me.) Permalink Leave a comment Spread the Word E-mail a friendCommentsBe the first to comment! Leave a Comment
