Today, Tablet Magazine came out with an extensively researched list that perked our ears up — the 100  greatest Jewish songs ever.

It’s a heady topic, one ripe for discussion and dissonance, but we applaud their efforts.

Tablet explained its rigorous song selecting process: “some were created by Jews, as Jews, for Jews. Some are by Jews pretending to be gentiles—or by gentiles pretending to be Jews.”

Top 100 includes the obvious — “Kol Nidre” and Neil Diamond’s “America”    the awesome —  “Blitzkrieg Bop” and “No Sleep Till Brooklyn” — and some interesting head-scratchers  — Madonna’s “Ray of Light.”

Either way, it’s a fun and resourceful collection for any casual Jewish music fan.

Best Jewish Songs?

What kind of Jewish music list includes “White Christmas” but leaves off “Sunrise, Sunset”? Have you been to a Jewish wedding, anniversary party or bar mitzvah in the past 45 years that had a band which did not play this song? Bob Dylan may be more familiar to baby boomers than Mickey Katz (Joel Grey’s father) but there is nothing Jewish about Dylan’s music or even his name. I guess he didn’t like the name Robert Zimmerman. You can listen to Mickey Katz’s “Duvid Crockett” here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwczIc4FNV0
