You will take my Sabra when you pry it out of my cold, dead fingers.

File this under "Really, people?!?"

JTA reports that Princeton students are considering asking the university's dining service to offer an alternative to the Sabra-brand hummus that is currently served on campus. Apparently a group called Philly BDS, which supports boycotts, divestment and sanctions against companies that support the Israel Defense Forces, is beyond the anti-Sabra campaign, which has been initiated on campus by the Princeton Committee on Palestine. (Interestingly, the committee is headed by an American-born Jew named Yoel Bitran.) The referendum has been placed on a United Student Government ballot, and results will be available Wednesday.

Sabra, in addition to taking its name from the nickname for Jewish Israelis (which itself is named after the sabra cactus, which is tough on the outside but soft and sweet on the inside), is partially owned by the Strauss Group, which publicly supports the IDF.

Where do I begin? First of all: Princeton has Sabra hummus?!?!? Jeez, Ivy League. I can't recall ever seeing hummus at my alma mater, the University of Maryland - which has lots more Jews than Princeton.

Second of all: Sabra makes the best commercial hummus. PERIOD. Tribe doesn't even come close and don't get me started on any of the others. If you're looking for an alternative to Sabra, there is none.

Third of all: Really, people?!? Why do you need to bring hummus - chickpea-y dip of the gods - into this? Just looking at that image above is making me want to lick the screen. Give me Sabra or give me death!
