Kiwi Jews, rejoice: New Zealand will allow kosher slaughter1:07 pm Monday, November 29, 2010by rachel leibold

Being a pescetarian, I'm not a fan of animal slaughter - kosher or otherwise - but I was heartened to read in JTA that an agreement was reached with New Zealand's Minister of Agriculture to allow kosher slaughter of poultry in the island nation. (Lamb, a staple of Kiwi culture, is still being negotiated, while beef will continue to be imported from Australia.) I feel a special kinship with Kiwi Jews, since my husband and I were married at the Dunedin Jewish Congregation last December. The Jews of Dunedin have a lovely, thriving community and are wonderful and welcoming, and I'm happy that they'll continue to have the opportunity to keep kosher if they so choose. Minister Carter should resign. He is openly anti-Semitic and showed this by beating up on the small Jewish Community in order to personally profit by selling meat to Muslims. PM Key, whose mother fled to NZ to escape persecution, shoule have acted more professionally. However,he now has the chance to make amends by firing Carter and reimbursing the small Jewish community the $300,000 in legal costs they incurred by fighting this great injustice.
If this ever happens again, perhaps Jews throughout the world will boycott NZ by not traveling there or buying goods made in NZ or by NZ companies.
