Diwon mixes free “mixtape”12:36 pm Monday, January 4, 2010by emily savage Ah the ancient art of the mixtape. Or should I say, the forgotten art of the mixtape. There once was a time when no expression of love was concrete without the inclusion of a tape full of meaningful tunes, recorded artfully on tape decks by one partner or another. But it is 2010, dear reader, and the mixtape lover letter has become all but obsolete - though some musicians have found unique ways to digitally revive the process. Electro/hip-hop producer Diwon (Erez Safar), known for his use of traditional Yemenite and Sephardic music, has created just the album for mixtape enthusiasts. His new eclectic mix of pop music meshed with his own sounds is available for free download here: i heart mixtape Safar is the founder and director of Jewish music site Shemspeed, indie record label Modular Mood Records and The Sephardic Music Festival. He is heavily influenced by his family roots in Yemen, Ethiopia and Israel and musically mashes the languages and genres of these locales with songs by Cat Power, Blur and Smokey Robinson among others. While i heart mixtape is not literally a mixed cassette tape, the diverse sounds, genres and artists are happily reminiscent of our old analog friend.
