I’m not a (dreidel) playa, I just crush a lot

East Bay nerdcore rapper Mc Lars isn’t Jewish – but he kind of wants to be, if only to get a chance to play dreidel with Jewish ladies like Natalie Portman and Sarah Silverman.

How do I know this? Because he raps about it in the song “Dreidel Playa” on holiday album This Is Your Brain On Xmas.

To create the track, San Franciscans Jeremy Solterbeck and Anne Cook recorded the beats last summer then hired local producers the Rondo Brothers to bring in a guest vocalist for the project — behold MC Lars.

“We wanted to do a "cool" holiday party album since we were sick of the traditional holiday music out there,” says Cook.

The fast-paced comedic hip-hop track subtly samples the more traditional dreidel song and includes lines such as “dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, these ladies make my day” and references to popular Yiddish words and Hebraic hotties.

As much as I generally have an aversion to comedy songs (barring Weird Al Yankovic’s “Trapped in a Drive Thru”). I have to admit — “Dreidel Playa” is damn catchy.

And on the This Is Your Brain On Xmas website you can download a nifty DIY Chanukah menorah-making kit featuring cartoon images of some recognizable Jews from the (Hollywood) hood — for free.
