Is Manischewitz anti-vegetarian?

Manischewitz recently announced their fourth annual "Man-O-Manischewitz Cook-Off," and it's a doozy. Finalists get to go to New York and compete for a state-of-the-art GE stainless steel kitchen appliance set, and the contest is being judged by none other than Jacques Pepin.

As usual, the contest requires entries to be kosher and use no more than eight ingredients, one of which has to be an Manischewitz ingredient. However, in a twist on the usual contest, all the recipes MUST include one of Manischewitz's new ready-to-serve broths - chicken, reduced-sodium chicken and beef.

Anyone see the problem yet?

That's right - by requiring entrants to use a meat-stock-based ingredient in their dishes, Manischewitz just disqualified all vegetarian, pescetarian and vegan cooks from the contest. Despite stating in its official rules that the contest is open to "all amateur cooking enthusiasts in the 50 U.S. states and District of Columbia who are 18 or older as of September 14, 2009 and who have not been designated as Finalists in a previous Manischewitz Recipe Contest," it most certainly is not. Perhaps it should be changed to "meat-eating amateur cooking enthusiasts."

So what's going on, Manischewitz? I've written to the company to ask about this, and will update this blog when I hear more.

the New Kosher

Thank you for bringing attention to this type of ignorance.  In my book, Kosher = Vegan (or at least Vegetarian or at least Pescatarian).

There is no room for cruelty and suffering in kashrut.  Stop the brutality of slaughter.  Redefine Kosher to include compassion.
