Comix Friday: This weekend in S.F. - the Alternative Press Expo!

It's finally here - APE weekend is upon us!

ape_logo_143APE, aka the Alternative Press Expo, is a fantastic San Francisco comic convention dedicated to alternative and self-published comix and independent publishers. For an alterna-comix fiend like me, this is literally heaven (it's like a larger version of S.F. Zinefest). The con is run by Comic-Con International, which also puts on S.F.'s WonderCon and the renowned Comic-Con in San Diego.

Despite APE being a potential highlight of my year, I haven't been to the con since 2006. In 2007, it was over Pesach, and I was out of town for the seders. Then last year, when the con moved to the fall, I was campaigning for a certain presidential candidate in Nevada that weekend. It was a really tough decision, but when that certain candidate ended up winning in Nevada, I knew it had been worth it. Even if I did had to miss APE.

No Jewish holidays or elections this year. I'm going to APE! I'm so excited. The expo will take place Saturday (11 a.m.-7 p.m.) and Sunday (11 a.m.-6 p.m.) at the Concourse Exhibition Center in San Francisco. Admission (pay at the door) is $10 for a day pass, $15 for the weekend. And bring plenty of cash - most of the comics are inexpensive (under $5) but they quickly add up!

So who's Jewish at APE? Miriam Libicki (Real Gone Girl Studios), the author of the autobiographical comic "jobnik!" about her experience in the Israel Defense Forces, will be at spot 345. (I hear Miriam has a new, post-graphic-novel "jobnik!" comic, as well as a reworked interview comic called "Who Wants to be an Art Star?" - hopefully she'll have both for sale!) And Yasmin Golan, the minicomic artist I wrote about recently in j., will be at 215 - I highly recommend her comics "My Father" and "Maids Rooms, Paris, 2002," and her Etsy site is showing a new comic called "Michael Jackson's Masculinity."

With most exhibitors being small and self-published, it's too difficult for me to tell if there are other Jews on the docket, but I'll do my best research while I'm there and hopefully be able to report back next week!

Non-MOT special guests will include Phoebe Gloeckner, Jamaica Dyer and Dean Haspiel, who recently illustrated Harvey Pekar's very Jewish "The Quitter."
