MGMT and Yo La Tengo at Treasure Island Fest!10:20 am Friday, October 16, 2009by emily savage
The Brooklyn-based indie rockers of MGMT (one of whom is Jewish) are officially within our lovely city. Tonight the duo will play a sold-out (like, seriously sold out, within minutes according to SFist) show at the Independent and tomorrow (Saturday) they headline the highly anticipated first night of the Treasure Island Festival on um, Treasure Island. According to Haaretz, the hipster twosome (Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden) got their first break through band manager Andrea Neustein, daughter of Israeli artist Joshua Neustein. All three attended Wesleyan University together and Neustein had a funny feeling about the hairy rockers, she was blown away by their sound. Their next big break came when last year's infectious dance-y synth-pop song/video "Kids" became an insta summer classic. It was even featured on teen soap "Gossip Girl." Omg.
On Sunday, another majorly hip Jewish indie rock act will take the stage during the second night of the Treasure Island Festival — Yo La Tengo. The act, co-founded by Jewish vocalist-guitarist Ira Kaplan and his wifey vocalist-drummer Georgia Hubley, is well known among indie circles. As they should be — they've been rocking the experimental music crowd since the 1980s. Now audiophiles, good luck getting in to the fest — I'll see you on the island! Seriously bad work, here, guys. The MGMT song that was on Gossip Girls is called “Kids”. Also, Andrew VanWyngarden is not Jewish, not even close. Suggest a fact-checking next time.

Hi Simon Snark,
Thank you for pointing out my silly mistakes, clearly I was already jumping ahead to my next thought by calling the song “Girls” instead of “Kids.”
And my bad about Andrew. I’ve gone ahead and made the proper corrections.
Lastly, the teen soap is actually called “Gossip Girl” not “Gossip Girls” as you suggested.
XOXO
Emily
