Lo-fi Israeli surf punk making waves11:21 am Tuesday, September 29, 2009by emily savage
Granted, I have a special place in my heart for both surf rock and 1960s-style lo-fi rock & roll. But an Israeli rocker hooking on to both styles in such a sweet way? Charlie Megira, my dear, you've got my undivided attention. The band, Charlie Megira and The Modern Dance Club, hail from Beit-She'an - a Northern Israeli town that touches both the Jordan River Valley and the Jezreel Valley. Other band members include drummer Mimi Shanel (ex-member of garage rock act Wetbones), guitarist Javier Scheiner and bassist "Dead Girl" (not quite sure what to make of that name). I'm crossing my fingers and hoping the fuzzy rockers will make their way to the Bay Area sometime in the not-so-distant future, and because I really couldn't say it better myself, here is an eloquent ending quote courtesy the band's webpage: "Hey Vesuvian rocker, the Modern Dance Club will make you burst!"
View their adorable tribute to those equally-adorable teeny-bopper beach movies of the 1960s:
