The Sway Machinery’s core-shaking service

I had no idea what to expect. I haven't been to Rosh Hashanah services in quite some time.  Truthfully, at home in Southern California we usually celebrated the new year with big family meals, perhaps after a day of swimming in Nana and Papa's room-temp pool. I've gone with friends to services over the years, but can't say I've ever been struck by a surprisingly inspiring, emotional core shaking service — until this past Saturday.

Hidden Melodies Revealed, which took place at Congregation Emanu El deep in the Richmond district, starred Jdub indie rockers the Sway Machinery — though lead singer Jeremiah Lockwood was the main attraction. After filling us with free wine, the temple shooed the crowd into its expansive sanctuary and we youngsters (full disclosure: most people there were 1-5 years younger than my group, but I enjoyed partying like the youngfolk for the night) took our seats. The lights lowered, and the hipster seated next to me screamed "shanah tovah!"

Lockwood emerged, steadily making his way down the aisle, microphone gripped in hand, subtle darkened mood lighting on his face. It was a pretty epic entrance. Quite theatrical, as was the rest of the evening. There were frantic horns, dramatic narratives and exquisite animation detailing the stories of the old book. Lockwood's booming cantorial vocals demanded attention, his passion for the music was contagious.

The kids got up and stayed up — dancing below the bimah till Lockwood packed up his guitar and left the stage.
