Yes to Irving Berlin, No to Joey Ramone1:34 pm Monday, September 14, 2009by emily savage
Joey Ramone was robbed! (But other worthy Jewish musicians deserve the distinction). Eighteen Jewish visionaries have been selected by online voters and a panel of historians to be highlighted in the National Museum of Jewish American History's Hall of Fame, set to open Nov. 2010. Individuals to be featured in the gallery include illustrious composers Irving Berlin, Leonard Bernstein — though sadly, no Joey Ramone. The Jewish punk singer was one of many choices, and will instead be among the 218 candidates featured in the museum's database. Still quite the achievement.During a one-month period, July 8 through August 6, 2009, the Museum invited the public to vote on the 18 to be included in the Only in America Gallery/Hall of Fame from a list of 218 possible candidates. More than 209,000 votes were cast from 56 countries on the museum’s website.
Additional individuals will be added to the Only in America Gallery/Hall of Fame in the coming years — so keep pestering them to include the lanky Ramone on a future date!
