Anne Frank, Disney-style?10:08 am Wednesday, August 12, 2009by emily savage
As we are all very much aware, the original play was based on the real life diary of a young girl hiding from the Nazis with her family in an Amsterdam attic. The play has been staged on Broadway multiple times, and was first adapted for film in 1959. That the story has managed to remain such a constant cultural fixture speaks to its universal appeal. During Hebrew school we watched the early black and white film, and I can remember a very specific moment of horrifying clarity - the Nazis took people just like me, young Jewish school girls with crushes, fits of discomfort and writing aspirations. Here's hoping the new adaptation does the diary justice. With Disney's current flock of pinch-nosed, cherub-cheeked tweens, I think we have some cause for alarm. It is true. Disney has enlisted playwright David Mamet to create a new screen adaptation of "The Diary of Anne Frank."
