Don’t miss ‘Contestant No. 2’ tonight (7/29) on KQED!

In last week's paper I gave a rather glowing review to a documentary called "Lady Kul el-Arab," which is playing in the S.F. Jewish Film Festival. It hasn't shown yet in the festival (its first screening is tomorrow at the Castro Theatre), but if you want to get a preview of what it's all about (or if you can't attend one of the JFF screenings), check out tonight's episode of the PBS show "Wide Angle." The show will feature "Contestant No. 2," which follows Druze beauty pageant contestant Duah Fares (the protagonist of "Lady Kul-el Arab") as she struggles to find a balance between the traditions of her community and faith, and her dream of wearing the Miss Israel crown.

"Wide Angle" will air on KQED-TV (channel 9 or 709 in HD) at 10 p.m.

I highly recommend you check out this show (it seems to include some of the same footage as "Lady Kul el-Arab") - Fares' story is really thought-provoking and has stayed with me even a few weeks after watching the documentary about her experience.

Check out a preview of "Contestant No. 2":
