The 18th Maccabiah Games are over and a couple great, local stories came out of Israel.

Team USA finished second in the overall medal count (84 gold, 92 silver, and 79 bronze), behind Israel (239 G 216 S, 173 B) and ahead of Australia (20 G, 19 S, 21 B).

Only 14 years old, Los Gatos native Sarah Williams took home two medals in track and field. She silvered in the 4 x 100 and the 4 x 400. (Jessica Fields, one of Williams’ teammates on the relay is from San Francisco.) One of the youngest athletes at the Games, Williams has a long, promising future ahead of her and chance to break some Maccabiah records.

By all accounts, the Games were a success. Over 7,000 athletes participated, making the Maccabiah Games the third largest sporting event in the world.

Next up in the world of Jewish sports is the Maccabi Games, right here in San Francisco. The Maccabi Games open this Sunday and run through the following Friday. The j. will be covering the Games from opening to closing ceremony. If you haven’t already, check out last week’s supplement, a comprehensive preview of the Games.
