The first week of the Maccabiah Games could not have gone much better for Team USA. In the first full week since competition began on July 12, Americans have grabbed a combined 82 medals (25 gold, 26 silver, 31 bronze).
A couple of local athletes are right in the thick of the medal hunt, including Los Altos native Jacqueline Levere who won gold in 200m breaststroke for the juniors division. Another junior, Ilana Gordon of San Carlos, walked away with silver in vaulting (gymnastics). Atherton resident Laura Lauder (of Estee Lauder fame) captured bronze in cycling.
Among the highlights from the first week was Jason Lezak destroying the Maccabiah record in the 100m freestyle. The fact that Lezak broke the record shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone after watching his thrilling performance in the 4 x 100 meter freestyle relay in the 2008 Summer Olympics that kept Michael Phelps’ dream of eight gold medals alive.
Several USA teams are simply dismantling the opposition, including the junior baseball team. The closest game the team has played so far was a 13-1 whipping of Canada. USA goes for the gold today against…Canada.
