Comix Friday: Welcome back, Captain America

Happy Fourth of July, comix fans! If you're in the U.S., I hope you have the day off - or at least have tomorrow set aside for barbecuing and eating red-white-and-blue sheet cake (I know I do!). Shomer Shabbos? The best fireworks start after dark!

captain_america_320(Don't worry, I'm not at work today - j. is giving us the day off. But I feel it's my duty as a patriot to bring you Comix Friday - even when I'm not in the office!)

For comix fans, this is an extra-special week. Just in time for the Fourth, an American legend is being revived: On July 1 Marvel Comics released the first issue of a new series, "Captain America Reborn." The series resurrects the classic superhero, who was killed two years ago by his girlfriend, Sharon Carter, who was being hypnotized at the time by supervillain Dr. Faustus.

The death of a superhero is always depressing - even before I knew (or cared) anything about comics, I remember being traumatized at the cover of 1992's "The Death of Superman." Of course, not knowing anything about comics, I thought he was really dead forever. But any good comix fan knows that you can never keep a good man (or woman) down for long.

captain_america_no_1_280Now, Captain America (aka Steve Rogers) himself is about as Jewish as a pig roast, but like all the greatest superheroes, he was created by Jews - Jack Kirby and Joe Simon, to be exact.

In his origin story, Rogers was injected by the U.S. Army with a serum that turned him into a "super soldier," so he could be used to fight against the Nazis. And it was the cover of Captain America #1 (from March 1941) that brought us the iconic image of the star-spangled hero popping Hitler in the kisser.

Marvel's got a "Reborn" site with lots of awesome Captain America art, and IGN has a revealing interview with Marvel's executive editor, Tom Brevoort, about the hero's return. So to celebrate this Independence Day, be sure to visit your local comic shop and pick up a copy of "Captain America Reborn"!

Captain America and inter-dating

“Now, Captain America (aka Steve Rogers) himself is about as Jewish as a pig roast”

True. However, he dated a Jewish neighbor (Bernie Rosenthal) whom he met back in Captain America #248 (1980). Another Jewish neighbor of his was Anna Kapplebaum, a Holocaust survivor (shown on the cover of Captain America #245 (1980).

Had Bernie not broken up with Steve, we may have seen a story where Steve Rogers, nhaving converted to Judaism, married Bernie under a chuppah.
