Best deal in town? SFJFF’s Reel Pass!9:13 am Thursday, June 25, 2009by rachel leibold
For $40, you can see the SFJFF's opening night movie, "Hey Hey It's Esther Blueburger" - and 70 others.
Are you 25 or under? Are you thinking, "Gee, I'd love to see some movies at the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival, but I'm a journalist/barista/funemployed and don't have the cash?" Enter Reel Pass. For $40*, 25-and-unders can see all the movies they can possibly stomach/skip work for, AND attend all special programs**, including the swanktastic Opening Bash at the Swedish American Hall. This is seriously the most insane deal ever (even better than those $10 Gevalia coffeemakers). In contrast, a single ticket to one film is $12, and the all-festival pass (the same as the Reel Pass, just for people over 25) is $225!! Tickets to the Opening Bash alone are $75!!!! If you're not sure why you should buy a Reel Pass because you have no idea how awesome the festival is going to be this year, I have two words for you: Israeli sumo. (Plus 70 other amazing films from all over the world, and neat-sounding events like Sumo and Sake - the full lineup is here.) Here's how sweet this Reel Pass is, if you're not convinced yet. *breaks into Billy Mays mode* Last year a friend of mine used her Reel Pass to see 11 movies and two screenings of Israeli TV shows. At the regular rate, that would have cost her $156. She paid only $40. THAT'S NUTS. People, if you buy the Reel Pass and only go to the Opening Bash and nothing else, you've saved $35. If you don't go to the bash but see just three movies the entire festival, plus you find $4 on the ground outside the Castro Theatre, you will have broken even. If you see four movies, you're already up $8. I completely fail at math***, and I still know how good a deal this is! This is my last year to qualify for the Reel Pass. I've never been to the SFJFF, and I somehow never even knew about the Reel Pass, but this year I am buying a Reel Pass and seeing every movie I possibly can. Who's with me?
* Plus a $6 service charge. ** The only thing the Reel Pass - and the all-festival pass - does not cover is the Rockin' Puppet Mayhem show. But I'll probably still go see it. *** Yes, I realize I'm not calculating in the service charge, but a liberal arts degree and two lower-level statistics courses will only get you so far.
