Take me out to the ballgame- but let’s keep it kosher11:11 am Monday, June 22, 2009by meredith malnick Baseball has always been an American pastime, and when AT&T Park opened in 2000 the San Francisco Giants and their fans had a new place to catch some major league action. Going to a game may be a religious experience for some of the Giants’ more avid fans, but for Jews there is one hurdle that presents itself within minutes of walking in the doors: Where is the kosher food? For those who keep strictly kosher, you may want to bring in your own snacks -- I would not trust that any vendor has a truly kosher kitchen unless there is a rabbi behind cashier. The vendors were very receptive to all my questions, so if it seems like the food stand may not meet kosher standards, just ask. Hebrew National has stands around the stadium and most of the hotdog vendors offer kosher dogs on their menu. There are also vegetarian hot dogs, prepared in a separate part of the kitchens. A universal favorite is the garlic fries, which can be enjoyed by everyone. For more food options try the clubhouse level, which has gourmet Panini stands and other eateries. In terms of prices, food was expensive, but the experience was worth it. Splitting a hot dog and fries is a good way to save dollars and still get your fill. Skipping the beer will also save you money, since the average price of beer at the stadium is $8. The Giants game was a blast, with or without the addictive garlic fries, and there was lots of dancing, yelling, and kvetching about the opposing team. Hebrew National strikes again! Nothing like a Giants ballgame with “dog” on it!
