Punk rock pioneers

To be completely honest with you, punk rock saved my life. It was just after my Bat Mitzvah but before actual adulthood. I was 14 with too much eyebrow and a mouth full of braces when I first heard the strains of Crass, Minor Threat, Dead Kennedys and The Ramones from my brand new boyfriend's junky old tapedeck. I was hooked immediately - finding comfort in the weirdness of it all, the weirdness of me.

At the time I didn't realize my other connection - the Jewish one - with many of the forefathers of the punk rock world. Nevermind the past, here's "Loud Fast Jews," an event for said forefathers at YIVO Institute for Jewish Research that took place in Israel last week. The panel included Tommy Ramone, Chris Stein of Blondie and other well-known Jewish punks all discussing the scene along with their own personal connections to Judaism.

The Jerusalem Post published an interesting piece on the event here.
