Comix Friday: MOCCA and more

by rachel leibold

Happy Friday, comix fans! I don't have a lot for you today, unfortunately - but next week I will have a Very Special Comix Friday, so stay tuned!

mocca_312My Canadian buddy Steve Bergson is in New York this weekend for the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art (MOCCA) Festival. Steve's Jewish Comics blog has an incredibly comprehensive list of all the Jewish comic artists who will be there (and links to their work!), including Miriam Libicki (one of the subjects of my 2008 story "Comic expressions"), Neil Kleid (look for a Comix Friday exclusive interview with him later this summer!), Ben Granoff (ditto) and Dan Goldman, who made the "Jewish porn" comic "Schmear." Here's hoping Steve keeps us updated on how the festival's going...I'm way jealous!

I've just started reading it, but I've been weirdly drawn into Leela Corman's comic "Unterzakhn," which was serialized last year by the Jewish Daily Forward. It's about a little girl in what appears to be the Lower East Side in 1909. (That contrasts interestingly with my cover story this week about the new American Girl doll, Rebecca.) More on "Unterzakhn" in coming weeks!

Comix Friday is published in the Art Scene blog every Friday, and focuses on Jewish comic artists and Jewish-themed comix. If you know of anything I should be blogging about in Comix Friday, let me know!
