Comix Friday: Comix for kids, and former kids

Hey y'all - I'm blogging from the Right Coast today - I'm at my parents' house in Maryland after seeing my brother graduate from my alma mater earlier in the day, with a BA in philosophy. I'm so proud of him (major nachas shepping going on), and I'm so happy to be here! But I haven't forgotten Comix Friday, so I have some sweet items for ya:

1) New Voices, the national Jewish student magazine, has a cute new four-page comic up by Ben Granoff and Dov Torbin, entitled "Telling Tales Out of (Hebrew Day) School." It's a story of hubris, redemption and mangling the words to the Birkat HaMazon (you know you did it too!). Ben and Dov are crazy talented, and I'll be featuring more of their work in the coming weeks.

joey_comix_2452) Sort of in the schoolyard vein, I've just discovered Paul Fricke, who does kiddie comix for the Tzvios Hashem Kid's Zone. I'm a little too old for the stories of Jewish kinder Joey and his friends, but I'm a huge believer in starting kids on comix early, and these brightly colored, well-drawn strips are perfect for reading and discussing with your own Joeys.

3) I also promised last week that I'd reveal who I voted for in JPS Interactive's People of the Comic Book tournament, so here goes (my picks in bold):
-Stan Lee vs. The Thing - this was a tossup. I just like The Thing.
-Shadowcat (Kitty Pryde) vs. Doc Samson - I already talked about my belief in Doc Samson as a George Mason-style spoiler, plus I like how Doc embodies the whole Jewish-guilt thing. (Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure Kitty will win, because everyone loves a Jewish girl.)
-Will Eisner vs. Magneto - after deciding that Magneto = Duke, it was a no-brainer.
-Willow Rosenberg vs. Sgt. Rock - I almost voted for Rock because Willow is kind of more of a witch than a Jew, but then I remembered that I totally dig Jewitches and magickal Judaism, so Willow won out.

That's it for this week - gotta get ready for Shabbat dinner! Good Shabbos, comix fans!
