The movie “Milk” got a decent amount of play in the Jewish press when it released last year.

I stayed all the way to the end of the final credits to see if the producers would give a nod to one of my favorite documentaries of all time, “The Times and Life of Harvey Milk.”

Much to my joy, they did!

Since retitled “The Times of Harvey Milk,” the film was an amazing, gripping, heart-warming, eye-opener when I saw it in 1984, as a 20-year-old fresh out of the suburbs. Times were much different then, and I was overcome with emotion when I saw it, but I revisited it on DVD a year ago, and it’s still a brilliant, dramatic, extremely moving and enlightening portrait of Milk – a piece of filmmaking that I’d say is actually better than the 2008 movie, which won the Oscar for best actor and best screenplay.

The documentary, narrated by Harvey Fierstein, was made by filmmakers Robert Epstein and Richard Schmiechen, along with editor Deborah Hoffman.

Now to the main point: From Friday, May 22 through Thursday, May 28, the Castro Theatre in San Francisco is going to be showing both “Milk” and “The Times of Harvey Milk” together on the same bill. The documentary screens nightly at 7 p.m. (with early shows at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday) and the Sean Penn version will show at 8:50 p.m. nightly (with 4:25 p.m. showings on Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday). Note: there will be no screenings on Tuesday, May 26. Click here for the Castro's full calendar.
