CBS’s “NCIS” makes “Aliyah”

Did anyone catch "NCIS" last night? (If you didn't, you can see the episode at CBS.com!) Normally I don't watch anything on CBS as a matter of principle (the principle being that I've never watched a show on CBS, and I hate to ruin a 25-year streak), but if I did watch something on CBS, it would be "NCIS." Mark Harmon is kind of awesome, and the one or two times I've seen this show, it's been pretty good.

Anyway, last night my boyfriend happened to flip to "NCIS" for the first time in ages, and lo and behold - Israel!

The episode, which was the season finale and appropriately titled "Aliyah," was pretty much Greek to me, not being a regular viewer. You can catch good recaps here and here. The gist (no real spoilers ahead) is that one of the show's main characters, Ziva, is a former Mossad agent, and when a Mossad agent named Rivkin is killed by a member of the NCIS team, most of the team heads to Israel to have a little chat with the head of Mossad, who happens to be Ziva's father - played by the very nicely coiffed Michael Nouri.

There were also a couple of cute Hebrew touches - like Nouri's character saying "rak shni'ah" ("just a second") when Ziva walked into his office while he was doing paperwork. And in a sort of weird moment, goth forensic chick Abby, who didn't travel with the team, freaked out to Mark Harmon's character over the phone about how badly she wants to visit Israel - noting that it was "No. 3" on her list of dream vacations, after the Galapagos Islands and Dollywood. (Did the Ministry of Tourism commission this episode? Seriously.)

My one sticking point was with Ziva - namely, her accent. The actress who plays her, Cote de Pablo, is Chilean American, and I honestly cannot tell what kind of accent she's trying to do. If Ziva is Mossad, she must have spent most of her life in Israel - but her accent seems to be a weird mix of American, Spanish and possibly some kind of Eastern European. Michael Nouri did a better job with his accent, though the best of the "Israelis" was Afrikaans actor Arnold Vosloo, who played Mossad agent Amit Hadar.
