There have been a lot of stories, conversations and comments at the j. lately about the life of the Jewish-American teenager. Photography teacher Nikki Levine went one step further, past conversations, and took some action. A few months back Levine, who works at the Jewish Community High School of the Bay, enlisted the help of student Jessica Katzki in creating a photographic essay — collection of portraits that are meant to "illuminate the complexity of the teenage experience."

Levine and sophomore Katzki took stunning photographs of female Jewish Community High School of the Bay students going about their daily lives — trying on prom dresses, texting friends, sitting amongst their artwork. The result of this collaboration is the startlingly beautiful and diverse exhibit "pretty/tough: the life of a teenage girl."

The exhibit will be on display from June 4 through July 8 at the Divisadero Community Gallery, 537 Divisidero St., San Francisco. There will be an opening reception during the Divisadero Art Walk from 6-9 p.m. June 4.

In addition to the exhibit, there also is a book for sale of their collected works, with commentary and information on the students.
