Comix Friday: New on Nextbook

vanessa davis, nextbook, comix friday, jittersVanessa Davis' May cartoon, "Jitters," is up on Nextbook.org. I totally relate to this line: "I don't know how much being Jewish has to do with it, but despite being otherwise pretty cheery, I'm very often freaking out." Like all of Vanessa's comix, this one is totally bright and beautiful. It kind of reminds me of when I lived in Florida, which is funny because she grew up in Florida.

I also just discovered "Sandals of Time," a cute comic Vanessa did for the New York Times on a "rite of summer" she discovered after moving to Santa Rosa from Brooklyn. I love finding little pieces my favorite comic artists have done!

eli valley, jewish entrepreneursEli Valley, whose comics appear in the Jewish Daily Forward, did an absolutely searing, hilarious comic for March: "Social Entrepreneurs Lost in Space." It's an incredibly insightful sendup of the new wave of young Jewish innovators - whom I love and appreciate, but, as you'll see, are fairly easy to satirize. ("Twittering: 'World just got crazy blowed up! Good opp't for re-brand?' ")

Valley's comics are not for everyone - take them with a HUGE grain of salt and proceed at your own risk.

"The Inner Life of Martin Frost," based on the novel "The Book of Illusions" by Jewish author Paul Auster, recently won two awards at the New York Book Show. The Bookbinders' Guild of New York named it "Best Art Book Under $75" and "Best Book -- Special Trade." "Martin Frost" is a collaboration between Auster and illustrator Glenn Thomas.  It also won an award for "Best Book Design of 2008" from Design, Type & Graphics magazine.

I won't even begin to try to understand what this book (or the original) is about - if anyone's read it, let me know in the comments!

Comix Friday is published in the Art Scene blog every Friday, and focuses on Jewish comic artists and Jewish-themed comix. If you know of anything I should be blogging about in Comix Friday, let me know!
