Israel’s Sela climbs in world tennis rankings

I consider myself a “hardcore” tennis fan – I can rattle off rankings, pick out players by their grunts alone and never think twice about losing sleep when there’s a live match to watch – at 3 a.m.

When it comes to Israeli tennis players, I can name the big three: Andy Ram, Jonathan Erlich and Shahar Peer. 200px-dudi_sela_israel_tennis_championship_2008_2_446

Yet, according to a recent Jerusalem Post article, there’s another name I should add to that list – Dudi Sela…I know, I was scratching my head too.

On April 27, Sela reached a career-high 56 in the ATP rankings by advancing to the second round of the Aegean Tennis Cup Challenger in Greece.

The 24-year-old handed wildcard Alexandros Georgoudas of Germany a 6-1, 6-0 loss in the first round and will face American Amer Delic next.

Sela is seeded first in the $125,000 tournament.

In other tennis news, the Jerusalem Post reports Erlich will make his long-awaited return from injury in Greece this week, partnering with Amir Hadad to build his fitness level before rejoining Ram in the ATP’s top events.

Erlich has been sidelined since the second round of the U.S. Open in August of last year.

Ram is playing with Max Mirnyi of Belarus in the Rome Masters this week. The pair, seeded seventh, received a first-round bye.

Shahar Peer, who’s playing in Fes, Morocco this week, is ranked 53 in the world.
