AT&T Park for JCC Maccabi Games closing ceremonies?10:54 am Thursday, April 23, 2009by andy altman-ohr ![]() Last week I was editing reporter Amanda Pazornik’s article for j. about the upcoming JCC Maccabi Games that are going to be held in San Francisco in August. When I went to fact-check something on the JCC of San Francisco’s Maccabi Games Web site – to my surprise there was a map of AT&T Park (click here to see it on sfgiants.com) when you hold your cursor over “Upcoming events.” AT&T Park? Hmmm. The opening ceremonies are going to be at the Cow Palace in Daly City, and the baseball competition is going to be (along with most events) at USF. So what’s with the AT&T map? Lo and behold, it turns out JCC organizers are working behind-the-scenes to secure the Giants’ magnificent ballpark for the closing ceremonies for Aug. 7. (Curiously, the Giants have a home game that night at 7:15 vs. Cincy, but perhaps the ceremony would be in the daytime? Or maybe the ceromony could be on Aug. 6, which is an off-day for the Giants.) In any regard, it’s all hush-hush right now. Word on the street, however, is that Giants President Larry Baer, a Congregation Emanu-El member and an active force in the local Jewish community (along with his wife , Pam, who is probably even more active) might be in on the plans to make things happen. It could be quite a scene out there on Aug. 7. No, the ballpark’s 40,080 seats won’t be close to being filled, but with 1,200 visiting athletes (between ages 12 and 16) and some of their families, 300 athletes from the Bay Area and their families, the hundreds of organizers and volunteers, and some 400 host families, well they’ll certainly have more than an minyan right there next to McCovey Cove.
