What's Jewish, Canadian and head-banging, 1980s-born heavy metal? I'd venture to guess very little. Except of course for the raucous rock band known as Anvil and the subsequent, heart-wrenching documentary of their quest for fame:  "Anvil! The Story of Anvil!"

The documentary follows Steve "Lips" Kudlow and Robb Reiner from the release of their ultimate heavy metal album "Metal on Metal" (1982) to near present-day, when the Jewish rockers are working menial jobs in their dreary snow-draped Canadian hometown, still aching for stardom. The film features some seriously amusing and strange moments (a real life "This is Spinal Tap") but in the end, everyone is rooting for the little band that could. I promise, during the last scene your eyes will well up with pride.

The documentary was screened last year during the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival, but now it's back with a very important twist — the band itself will perform post-screening. That's right. Anvil — live!

The screening and performance are set for this Sunday, April 12 at Slim's in San Francisco. Tickets are $18 and open to all ages. The film will be shown at all Landmark Theaters in San Francisco and Berkeley beginning April 24 for just one head-thrashing, neck-twisting week.
