Get a funky seder plate!3:31 pm Tuesday, March 24, 2009by stacey palevsky Living so far away from my family has inspired me to organize my own seder for the past three years. Each time I've put my own personal stamp on the decor, food and haggadah. The first year was pretty traditional, the second year was huge and joyous and potluck-y, and the third year was funky and Sephardic with spicy foods eaten cross-legged on tapestries instead of a table. I loved the earthiness of it, that even without the conventions of a table, my friends -- all California transplants like myself -- could be strangers together in a comfy San Francisco flat.
This year, I'm going back to Cleveland, which will be my first Passover with my parents in six years. I'm so excited about it, but a part of me is a little sad too. It means I won't have as much influence or control over the texture, pace and flavor of the seder. Which got me thinking about small ways to snazz up a conventional seder. A new, creative and funky seder plate has got to be the easiest way. I did a little digging so you don't have to. Here's one by SF artist Aimee Golant.
Here's one by Canadian artist Temi Firsten.
And here's one from this very cool Web site I just discovered, ModernTribe.com (Check out their jewelery too. Love their earrings.)
