A beer and a toast (follow up to column on late Bill Brand)10:29 am Friday, March 20, 2009by andy altman-ohr In my column this week, I paid tribute to Bill Brand, a friend and a nationally known beer journalist who died last month from injuries he sustained when he was hit by a streetcar in San Francisco. A lot of people knew him for his beer expertise, but they didn't know he was Jewish and a member at Temple Isaiah in Lafayette. First, at the Fairfax Brewfest on March 14 in Marin County, there wer about 35 different beers to be sampled -- but none was drawing more attention than the Bill Brand Brown. The brewer from Triple Rock Brewery in Berkeley made it in honor of Brand (it was a special batch of a dark brown ESB usually called Dragon’s Milk).
Also, there’s going to be one final toast to Bill on Thursday, March 26. It’ll be at Wine Thieves in Lafayette, where one of the part-owners has a beer tasting group (that Bill was an active part of). There's going to be a beer tasting of some of the best craft brews out there right now, including many of which Bill reviewed. It’s $20 and will take place from 7-9 p.m. in the store at 3401 Mt. Diablo Blvd., Lafayette. In my column, I cited a few “Jewish” references Bill had made in his beer writings: here is one about a Chanukah beer called “Rejewvenator” and here is another titled “He’brew - The Chosen Beer: How It All Began.” CommentsBe the first to comment!
